South Africa – Underberg and the Sani Pass – part 1

After extensive research, Sandra decided to stay in Underberg which gave easy access to the Sani Pass. The Sani Pass starts at 1544m and rises 1332 vertical meters to summit at 2876m. It’s also considered a birding hotspot. Our accommodation was at Panorama Hideaway Underberg, and after a very nice introduction we watched the sunset….

South Africa – Sheffield Beach

One of the things that Sandra likes is snorkelling. Having read up about South Africa she decided she wanted to visit Sheffield Beach area, on the Dolphin Coast, and take a look at the tidal pools. We stayed at Bed and Breakfast by the Sea which had amazing views of the sea from a high…

South Africa – St. Lucia

Having left Kruger we traveled to Piet Retief and had an overnight stay at Röhrs Farm Guesthouse. This was a fantastic B&B and it’s a shame we didn’t stay longer. Walking around the gardens we managed to see the following. The next morning after a leisurely breakfast it was on to St. Lucia. What an…

South Africa – Kruger National Park – Lower Sabie

We drove from Oliphants Camp to Lower Sabie which as it’s all within Kruger is actually a game drive. One of our dilemmas for this trip was whether to rent a 4 wheel drive or just an ordinary 2 wheel drive. Having researched it we decide that a normal 2 wheel drive would be ok….

South Africa – Kruger National Park – Oliphants Camp

From the Panorama Route we travelled to Kruger National Park. We had 4 nights in the park and stayed at 2 different camps. The 1st camp was Oliphants overlooking the Oliphants river. It would have been great to sit and eat overlooking the river but this wasn’t possible due to the unusually high winds whilst…

South Africa – Panorama Route

After months of planning by my wife we finally arrived in Johannesburg, South Africa in the afternoon of the 16th January 2019. We found our transfer after a bit of trouble and were transported to the Airport Game Lodge for the night. A good night’s sleep and with excellent gardens to walk around in the…

Processing for Birds – Dodge and Burn

Sometimes you get a shot of a bird that’s in focus with good light, good perch, and good background only to be spoilt by a shadow. The image below is ok except for the shadow of the bill.  Wouldn’t it be great if you could remove it. Well you can using the following technique. Download…

A varied week

A real mixed week.  Went to Littondale for the weekend.  Sandra walked to Malham and I walked as far as the waterfall behind the caravan park in the hopes of getting some decent Kestrel shots.  Sat for over an hour near to the waterfall but only saw the Kestrel in the distance.  On the return…

A week in Menorca

It was a weeks holiday in Menorca with the grandchildren and their parents, but I tried to fit some bird photography in as well 😉 There were plenty of Yellow-legged Gulls and Audouin’s Gulls flying around the hotel looking for an easy meal.  I was surprised with the Audouin’s Gulls as they’re not supposed to be…
